When Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) was introduced pyrosequencing (Roche 454 GSL-FX) Illunmina sequencing (MiSeq) and Minion sequencing of RNA viruses were developed. In a freezer virus archaeology approach, digging through literature, many European arboviruses were sequenced. My second interest is molecular epidemiology and NGS (Roche 454 GSL-FX, Illunmina MiSeq, MINION) was used in a freezer virus archaeology approach, to sequence many European arboviruses for the first time and many more African and South American viruses. On the back of these activities molecular epidemiological analyses were performed on the spread of arboviruses in Europe (TIBV, SINV) and Africa (USUV, ZIKV, BAGV) and the ongoing evolution of Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus in vaccinated, IPNV tolerant farmed salmon in Scotland, and in non-vaccinated trout in Iran and Turkey.

Minion sequencing has now been adapted to the mobile suitcase laboratory.
