When Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) was introduced pyrosequencing (Roche 454 GSL-FX) Illunmina sequencing (MiSeq) and Minion sequencing of RNA viruses were developed. In a freezer virus archaeology approach, digging through literature, many European arboviruses were sequenced. This also lead to molecular epidemiological work on e.g. the spread of TBEV in central Europe and more recently on the evolution of IPNV on Scottish salmon farms.
Minion sequencing has now been adapted to the mobile suitcase laboratory.
